What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that has been used for over 200 years and is based on the principle that like cures like. It can be used to treat both acute (sudden onset – injuries first aid, fevers, etc) and chronic (longstanding, recurring) ailments. Homeopathy works by assisting the body’s natural ability to heal itself and is natural, non toxic and free from harmful side effects. This means that it is suitable for all people from newborns to the elderly. It is particularly suitable for pregnant women and young children who may be more sensitive to the side effects of conventional drugs.
Homeopathy is holistic in that it treats the whole person rather than just the presenting symptoms. This means that the characteristics of the whole person are taken into account when arriving at an individualised prescription, not just the physical symptoms. It can therefore also be used for people who are just feeling generally unwell or a bit low.
Homeopathic remedies are non toxic and non addictive. They are prepared in laboratories licensed by the department of health to strict standards of quality. They are not tested on animals.
What can it treat?
Homeopathy can be used in both acute and chronic conditions. It is a holistic medicine which treats the person, therefore patients are treated as individuals, not as a collection of disease labels. There is some evidence to suggest it can help a person manage the symptoms of:
Menopausal problems
PMS
Stress and Anxiety
Depression
Cystitis
Allergies e.g. hayfever
Recurrent colds, catarrh and glue ear
Arthritis
Eczema
